South Beach is not just for Partying! Giant 100+ Pound Wahoo Caught on 20 lb Line on the Spellbound – Miami Beach, Fl
When you think of South Beach Miami, Florida most people think of hot, sizzling action & the beach, but how about the action two miles east of the beach. The 57′ charter fishing boat Spellbound was just on one of their normal 1/2 day four hour fishing trips with a few novice anglers just looking to have a little fun catching a few fish, little did they know they were truly on the trip of a life time!
The action started out slow, just a King Fish at first. Then a 4+ foot Silky Shark attacks a live Bonito fished in the long rigger position. It was a rougher day with the seas running at about four foot with the occasional seven foot wave rolling in, just to make sure we were paying attention.
Late in the trip another live Bonito in the short rigger position, closest to the boat gets eaten. The rod bend over and in just a few second line is pouring of the small reel at an alarming rate. Capt. Manny Sivina quickly reacts, and begins to back down on the giant mystery fish. With over 600 yards of 20 lb line stretched out through the heavy sea, the line flowing off the reel slows down and finally stops. With more than 90% of the reels line stretched out, Manny quickly spins the boat around an begins to charge forward towards the fish. Slowly line starts to build back up on the reel, the angler works hard and mystery fish turns toward the boat. More than half the line is back on the reel and the fish sounds on us. The means the fish leaves the surface of the Gulf Stream and swims deep into the cooler water.
At this point we are now fighting for inches of line. Its a long and slow retrieve of line, with a lot of muscle power, finesse and patience. Inches of line become feet and seconds become minutes, time moves slowly but the giant fish is getting closer and closer. The give and take of line becomes more take after the fish takes a run or two.
Capt. Manny finally yells “I see color” the big fish is now in sight, but still nearly 100 feet away. The fish is now in a pattern of circling through the water and Capt. Manny knows that this is the sign that the great fish is exhausted. The inches continue to come in slow and the fish grows larger and larger as it gets closer to the boat. As unexpected as the original bite, the great fish breaks the surface and Chad Raney the mate gets a hold of the leader. Capt. Manny nearly jumps from the bridge of the boat to the deck and is able to get a great shot with the gaff and secure the fish. It’s a giant Wahoo, to big for Manny to get over the rail. Chad gets another gaff and the two of them are able to land the Wahoo.
The fish stood six foot four inches and weighed in at over 100lbs. One of the largest Wahoos’ caught off Miami, and the largest in recent history to be landed on the Haulover docks and Park Marina.
